Each week the Creative Writing Class focuses on a new form of writing highlighting each scholar’s potential. This week’s discovery was the poetry within each writer’s hearts embodying forms of writing yet to be seen. The class fills with quiet, engaged faces as they share a moment understanding the context of poetry through a TedTalk presented in front of the class.

After discussions take their course from the video, Teacher Megan Sampson decides to change up the conversation targeting emotions (happiness, sadness, excitement and fear). Each group is tasked with finding other words that they consider to fit in the categories of said emotions. Faces emergent with thrill and understanding as words fill the space of discussion. Pencils begin to tremble as the words come out spitting from their pencils, new ideas float into mind when another vocalizes something. Lightbulbs everywhere, the continuous arrays of words compile only to be left with the choice of picking a singular word from their long letter-like lists for the next activity to come.

From the choice of words picked, the scholars had to write a poem based on the word to create their own creative resurgence of works. The forefronts of their minds begin to prosper as poetry fills the pages they write. “7, 24, 23, 18, 14” the lines fill up for each individual scholar stating how many lines their poems attest to. Some needing visual commentaries to truly be portrayed as works, others prefer to speak of them aloud vocalizing their hearts and minds.

“Poetry is like a language.” Scholars agree upon as many build their courage to share their works to the class as well as the thoughts upon their poems word choice. Snaps fill the room after each presentation of poems allowing for a warming and welcoming environment for all to share. However, many wish to disclose their works which were equally supported as the circle spread of words and lines of rhyme schemes and utilizations of linguistics.

The expectations of creativity go further than ever as writers change the waves of writing itself. Be sure to find more of the Creative Writing classes works to be posted!
