Scholars in the healthcare industry focus area have been introduced to a wide variety of learning methods throughout their stay on Murray State’s Campus. Whether a scholar learns best through visual, auditory, reading & writing or kinesthetic learning style (also known as VARK), Instructor Sashi Papu John has made a point to provide a unique method of learning to fit every scholar’s preference.

For scholars who prefer more visual or auditory learning styles, Sashi has shared her own personal stories and knowledge over the medical field, shown Powerpoints and played instructional videos for her class to review and have discourse over. Those who enjoy reading and writing their own information are given the opportunity to discover more information as well. Scholars are encouraged to take notes and do additional research in the computer labs and library during class time. This past week, scholars have been tasked with creating their own Powerpoint presentations demonstrating their knowledge over various diseases and illnesses, treatments, side effects and prevention methods. Not only does this project allow scholars to read and write down the information that they learn, but also share visually and audibly with other scholars as they present and work on their public speaking skills.

In addition to her visual, auditory and writing methods of teaching, Sashi has also provided hands-on kinesthetic learning style opportunities for her scholars to partake in. Sashi has taken her scholars to the Kentucky State Park to explore nature and how illnesses and diseases from the outside can easily spread and taken them to the waste water management in Murray to discover how untreated water can cause contamination and disease and how water is tested and treated. Has has also taken them to the local recycling center to learn how solid waste is disposed of and managed. Field Trips are not the only hand-on experience that scholars get in the healthcare industry focus area. Scholars have also conducted experiments to learn how to manage and check one’s blood pressure and understand how blood pressure can fluctuate.

As one may assume, the healthcare industry focus area is targeted at scholars who wish to pursue careers and education in the healthcare industry. Sashi hopes that it will act as a foundation course where scholars can explore the various opportunities available to them and further develop their love and knowledge for the medical field.
