The Political and Legal Issues focus area at Murray State GSP is led by Dalton York. “The scholars will be exploring our political and legal systems through the lens of the external forces that influence public perception and internal policy-making decisions. In short, we are diving into political communication,” said Dalton. For the last two weeks the scholars have been diving into different political topics and aspects, such as a deep dive into the Kentucky and United States  constitutions and journalism bias. However, it isn’t all current events and breaking news.

This week, Dalton is leading the scholars through the life of a law student. Since he is a current law student Dalton is able to share his own experiences to really put the life of a law student into perspective for scholars. Dalton discussed the fundamental resources for a law student. He talked about the importance of scholarships and the wide variety of student support you can find on a law school campus.

The class was able to complete an interactive module for law students. The particular module they completed was on time management. Daily to-do lists, weekly reflections and extensive scheduling were just a few of the skills they learned. The scholars learned to use different tactics to avoid procrastination. Such as small breaks, being alert, self-grace and accountability partners.

Dalton was also able to express how expensive law school is. He explained that it is crucial to try to score high on the LSAT exams in order to qualify for the best scholarships. He was then able to get the scholars involved by throwing practice exam questions their way. He showed them how to draw out their thoughts and best answer the questions. Dalton’s class dives into many topics that are all important for scholars interested in a career in politics or law.
