While me and Stevie decided to spilt up for this premiere, it didn’t stop me from enjoying, in my opinion, one of the best coming of age films I’ve ever seen. Students made the trek to to Mason Auditorium to watch Little Women, and for most, it was their first time getting to go off perimeter. Very exciting.
The 2019 adaptation of Little Women follows suite of becoming a timeless classic. The story follows the March family (Jo, Beth, Amy, Meg and Marmee march) and Laurie family through their struggles and heartbreaks of growing up. It’s a beautiful story of how you can get anything done as long as you put your will to it. The main protagonist, Jo, takes the challenge of doing just what she wants, and writes down everything that she thinks of in hopes of, one day, being a big time author. She even mentions in the film, “No one will forget Jo March,” referring that she will go down in history. She and her sisters all have great ambitions that they all achieve in one way or another.
The film was full of amazing scenes that I loved so much, but my favorite would have to be when Jo is watching her first book get printed and put together. It has flashbacks to when Jo was younger with her sisters, and shows just how far they’ve all come. The scene greatly encapsulates a perfect “full circle” moment. It’s such a warm and feel good scene, you really can’t help but to love it.
The Horseshoe Award would go to Amy March. She’s my favorite character because throughout the entirety of the film, she is always shown as the “second choice,” and at the end of the film she shows just how she shouldn’t be put in to that place. Amy perseveres through all of her own hardships, and that’s what brought her to get our Horseshoe Award.
My favorite quote would be from Jo when she has a big conflict with Amy. She says, “Life is too short to be mad at one’s sister.” She is learning a lesson about not holding grudges against the ones that you love. How they can tear people around you apart over something that could simply be forgiven and forgotten.
I give this 4/5 Shoes Up!
