On Wednesday night, scholars signed up for an intellectual buffet— lessons and activities hosted by RAs and staff. One such group of scholars gathered in room 301 of Faculty Hall with Megan Bradley, who hosted a discussion titled “Manic Pixie Seam Girl.” Many scholars arrived uncertain of what to expect, but regardless of how they entered, they all left with a smile and a new skill.
Manic Pixie Seam Girl highlighted the issue of the fast fashion industry, and specifically how fast fashion affects our environment, those who create clothing, and how money is spent. Scholars explored a plethora of ways to counteract these issues and turn away from fast fashion. Possible solutions included thrifting, shopping local, building a capsule wardrobe, and mending clothes.
Bradley then proceeded to display how some of these solutions worked and gave scholars the opportunity to learn how to mend their own clothes in a basic and fun way. Each scholar received a small piece of paper, a needle, and some thread in order to sew a design that would patch holes in worn out clothes. Some scholars chose to make letters or shapes, but surprisingly the vast majority of Scholars chose to mend their clothes using a cartoon of a rat king.
Bradley instructed scholars on the mending process and techniques to efficiently mend their clothes. It was tricky for those without experience, but by the end of the class, improvement was evident in every student. Scholars may have left with knowledge on how to mend clothes, but they also left with a grin from ear to ear as they walked back to their dorms, rat kings in hand.
