INTRAMURAL FIELDS– Scholars, along with their Leadership Seminar classmates, headed to the IM Fields Sunday to participate in the 2023 GSP Olympics.

The GSP Olympics, a favorite among mandatory events for scholars, put leadership seminar against leadership seminar in a series of relationally, intellectually and athletically challenging events. Of course, GSP is not a competition, but this didn’t stop seemingly every scholar from giving their all and propelling their team to victory and success. As RA Calder Beasley put it, “Some people can get a bit competitive or driven to perform as best they can . . . I think it was very spirited.”

When asked what made the Olympics such a staple event at GSP, Calder said, “I think that the bonding of the leadership seminar/general studies groups is really awesome, because you’re in classes, but then you actually get to hang out together outside and do really funny, fun things, and so I think everyone gets closer.”

But the fun wasn’t only for the scholars. Calder said on behalf of the RAs that it seemed like everyone was having fun leading their events and seeing scholars having such fun, and the morale among the event leaders was “awesome” – after all, when you have a bunch of 17- and 18-year-olds spinning in place around a baseball bat and screaming their lungs out to some of the biggest hits of the 2010s, it would be hard not to crack a smile.

The Olympics were the final community-wide athletic event for the 2023 GSP Murray term, but most – if not all – clubs are still holding regular meetings. A pickup game of basketball or volleyball can also almost always be found going on in the Wellness Center. Despite a lack of mandatory athletic activities for the rest of our stay, scholars still always have the opportunity to advance their physical fitness and try new things.
